Explore the Overberg from Trail’s End Bike Hotel

Only 60km from Cape Town, Grabouw is the perfect escape from city life. The Elgin Valley is just a bike ride away with the whale watching mecca Hermanus, within 40 minutes’ drive. Grabouw is a popular spot to enjoy outdoor activities and there’s something for all the family to enjoy! If you are not out dominating those trails, there are plenty of top class wine farms, restaurants, popular farm stalls and coffee shops to visit.

Elgin Valley Trail Network

Trail’s End is privileged to have some of the country’s top mountain biking trails right on its doorstep. With the Grabouw Forest Trail network starting out the back door! These include the Wines2Whales A-Z trail which can be connected to the excellent trails of the local wine farm, Oak Valley, which also often feature in the Cape Epic and Wines2Whales routes, you’ll be spoiled for choice! There are also the famous Paul Cluver trails which are only open by appointment for our in-house guests. If cycling isn’t for you, the Grabouw Forest Trails are excellent on foot too, or if you are willing to take a short drive the Kogelberg Nature Reserve is worth a visit.

The local trail network is available on TrailForks. We can also arrange bike hire for you.

4 Passes Challenge

Trail’s End is perfectly situated on the infamous 4 Passes route, consisting of the Viljoen’s Pass, Franschhoek Pass, Helshoogte Pass, and Sir Lowry’s Pass (or Gantouw Pass if you’re on a MTB). While this route is by no means new, with Pro mountain bikers and roadies alike using the respective routes as a long ride in their base training blocks, we think we have put together the ultimate MTB route for you to follow! We have included as many of our favourite trail’s on route as possible, but we would love to see you add your own touch to it, whether you brave a few laps on the G-Spot trails as you pass through, or you aim for more vert than anyone else doing our route by climbing Hansekop at the end, tell us about it and we will feature you along with the fastest times on the leader board.

The standard Road Route is available below too, please be cautious on Sir Lowry’s Pass especially, it has minimal shoulder, but the views on the ride are unbeatable!

Tag us in your adventures (@trailsendbikehotel), we’d love to share them!

GRAVEL BIKEPACKER LOOPS

Planning a bikepacking trip, why not start and end your adventure with us? Spend the night before, and/or after your trip at Trail’s End and leave your car securely parked with us and extra luggage safely stored. Whether you are planning a multiday expedition, an overnighter, or just an out and back, it’s always nice to know you’ll have a comfortable bed waiting at the end, why not throw in a massage, and did we mention we have a pool?

Trail Running/Hiking

If cycling isn’t for you, there are plenty of trails to explore on foot. We are in the heart of the Kogelberg Biosphere, with its abundance of flora. Whether running or hiking, our trails will take you spectacular displays of fynbos and great viewpoints.

Be sure to book a guide if you are not familiar with the area.

Swimming

Our 20-meter two-lane pool accommodates serious (or not-so-serious) swimmers. It is solar heated and ideal for training in the warmer months. It’s a great asset for multi-disciplined athletes needing a training base with the added combination of trail running and mountain biking also on-tap. Should you prefer open water swimming, the Eikenhof Dam is a short run from Trail’s End. We need to notify the Elgin Grabouw Sports Club, so please arrange this with us in advance.

Fitness Classes

Is the weather putting you off hitting the trails? Or are you looking to get some marginal gains (and prevent injuries) with some cross training? Why not join one of our on site fitness classes? Pilates or yoga will strengthen your core and improve your stability for running, cycling and everyday activities. Power spinning and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) will improve your explosive power, and you’ll even have fun while doing so!

Wellness Treatments

After a long day out exploring the trails, there’s nothing better than treating yourself to some pampering. Whether a sports massage to loosen up your tight muscles or a facial to relax, or any of the other specialised treatments offered by Pamper Wellness, you’re guaranteed to leave feeling revitalized.

Adventure Activities

The Overberg region is a hot spot for the thrill-seeker and outdoor enthusiast. With breathtaking mountains, the vast ocean and calming rivers you can find all types of outdoor activities to keep you and your family busy. If you don’t mind getting a bit dusty and muddy, at an extra expense, we offer quad biking through CAPE ADVENTURE ZONE – you’ll get to experience the fynbos without the physical exertion. We highly recommend the CAPE CANOPY TOUR zipline and if you’re feeling extra energetic, you can even cycle there and back! Equestrian lovers do not fear, horse riding can be arranged. Grabouw and its surrounding areas will always have something up its sleeve.

WINE FARMS AND EATING OUT

We are spoilt for choice here. Our area has a fantastic reputation for wine, craft beer and cider. So, if you fancy a more sedate experience of our area, or want to reward yourself for endeavours out on the trail, why not take a trip through some of the ELGIN WINE ROUTE or visit some of our CRAFT CIDER producers? Food-wise, there is a wide variety of choice, from farm stalls to pizzas to more refined dining. Why not visit the ELGIN RAILWAY MARKET for a huge range of cuisines under one roof? You can even watch the steam train arrive on the weekends. Check out the Elgin Grabouw Tourism website for a full list.
