OUR STORY
Trail’s End Bike Hotel was the brain-child of Pieter Silberbauer and his business partner Johannes Matthewson. After spending over 25 successful years in the house building business together they were looking for a dramatic change that allowed them to work closer to home. Pieter, himself a mountain biking enthusiast, saw that their factory was ideally situated for outdoor and fitness buffs who want to explore the Overberg and, inspired by bike hotels he’d seen in Holland and Japan, decided that it was exactly what the community needed.
The hotel has grown and evolved in leaps and bounds since it opened in 2015, constantly adding new features to make for a more enjoyable stay, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. What with our pump track, training pool, climbing wall, gym, Pilates studio and in-house masseurs, as well as our latest addition of the First Bicycle Museum in Africa, you may find you never want to leave.

OUR VISION
Our vision when establishing Trail’s End Bike Hotel was to be able to use our skills and influence to give back to our community. We work in partnership with local NPO, Grabouw Beautiful, who have initiated a number of catalyst projects designed to change lives, to offer opportunities and to bring hope to this struggling community. As part of Grabouw Beautiful’s recycling project, deserving beneficiaries can earn bikes in exchange for various commitments such as cleaning rivers, recycling waste and improving their school grades. Once their bikes are earned, beneficiaries are encouraged to improve their cycling skills so we hold regular training clinics and bike maintenance courses for them in collaboration with our partners: The Bike Empowerment Network (BEN), Pedal Power Association (PPA) and Qhubeka. Many of these youngsters are now taking part in the regular cycling events hosted in the Elgin Grabouw Valley and it’s great to see them becoming part of the local cycling community.
GIVING BACK
Our goal is for Trail’s End Bike Hotel is to become a global destination for adventure enthusiasts, and beyond that, a place where local meets world, ideas are shared and solutions are found. As active members of the Grabouw community, we are fully aware of the challenges our town – like so many in South Africa – faces and we are excited to think that Trail’s End Bike Hotel could play a significant part uniting the local community through sport as well as providing much needed jobs as it contributes to building the local tourism industry.
Mens sana in corpore sano.
