At Trail’s End Adventure Hotel, we believe in building bridges—literally and metaphorically. On November 30, 2024, we celebrated the grand reopening of the historic Overberg Meander Bridge, a project close to our hearts and one that has truly united our community.
The bridge, originally constructed over 120 years ago, is a testament to resilience. It has endured the passage of time, surviving natural elements and a devastating fire in 2018 that left it severely damaged. For years, our owner Pieter Silberbauer and his team worked tirelessly to construct temporary alternatives, only to see them swept away by floods. Yet this time, thanks to the skills of builder Elias Chivhenge, the support of the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, and the determination of our community, the Overberg Meander Bridge has been fully restored.
To commemorate such an achievement, we hosted the reopening day as a celebration equal to our excitement. With cyclists of all ages riding across the bridge, accompanied by the enchanting sight of the Ceres Rail steam train puffing alongside them, we glimpsed what this accomplishment means for the community. Prof Mike Bruton ceremoniously cut the ribbon on his Hobbyhorse, officially reopening this vital connection between Grabouw and the Elgin Valley.
This bridge is more than a safe cycling route for Two-a-Day workers or a tourist attraction linking Trail’s End Adventure Hotel to the Elgin Railway Market; it’s a symbol of what we can achieve when we work together. “Building Bridges” has become a theme for us at Trail’s End and this project reflects our ongoing mission to uplift those around us. From development cyclists and forest monitors to our bicycle mechanics courses, we are collaborating with passionate individuals and organisations to make a lasting impact.
The Overberg Meander Bridge marks a new chapter for those of Grabouw and the greater Elgin Valley. Whether you’re a cyclist seeking adventure or a visitor exploring the region’s beauty, this bridge welcomes you to experience the connection, resilience, and joy that define our community.
Let’s keep building bridges together!
